Thayer Machine Shop TA: Fabrication

at Thayer School of Engineering

Ongoing since January 2019

As a teaching assistant for Dartmouth's machine shop, I learned how to operate and maintain the shop's tools and resources. I also helped researchers, students, and shop instructors design and manufacture parts for their projects.

Skills learned include turning metal on a lathe, using a mill, TIG and MIG welding, designing for and operating CNC routers, color 3D printing, and polymer processing.

One club I helped manufacture parts for was the Dartmouth Formula Racing club (DFR). DFR designs, builds, and optimizes a hybrid Formula Student car and races it in events.

I fabricated a tool to take apart the engine for maintenance rather than buying the specialized tool from the manufacturer, thereby saving the club hundreds of dollars.
